NW Indian

The complex symbolism of the Indians of the Northwest coast of North America is ideally suited to glass.  Originally carved on wood and shell for totem poles and decoration on house fronts and utilitarian items, the transition to glass was natural step.

Birds, animals and mythical creatures are the subject of Northwest Coast Indian Art, with specific stylized features representing each character.  One or several features may be shown, but the use of only one can serve to identify a specific creature.  The designs are crated to fill a space (open areas are unacceptable) and various traditional shapes and motifs are used as fillers, often making identification an interesting challenge.

My interest in these designs began as a student at Washington State University many years ago, but only with the availability of suitable glass and the equipment in my studio have I been able to pursue that interest through the development of these pieces. Several hours are involved to produce each piece and no two pieces will be exactly alike.

For more information about the available designs and limited editions please call Cheri or stop by the studio.
